File Sharing on Mac OS

Like in Windows, the File Sharing feature supported on Mac, lets you share files and folders present on your Mac with other computers that are connected to the network. In Mac you need to login as Administrator for enabling the share option for files and folders on your computer. There are different protocols like FTP, AFP and SMB (SAMBA) that you can use for sharing your files. You also have the option to customize the sharing option by setting privileges for a set of users or a particular group of users.

You can make folders sharable, by following the steps given below,

  • Login using the Administrator user account on your Mac.
  • Select the Apple Menu, and from it select System Preferences.
  • Select the Sharing option from the View Menu.
  • Once you click the + icon that is present below the Shared folders field, a new window is displayed, where you can select the folders that you want to share, as shown in the figure below,

You can alternatively select the file or folder, select the Get Info option, and then enable Shared folder to make the folder shareable. You can add any number of users by using the + icon present under the user's field. By default, the privilege for an user is Read-Only. This can be changed to Read & Write, Write Only and No Access based on your requirement. While sharing files and folders with other Macs you can make use of Apple Filing Protocol. While sharing files with UNIX and LINUX systems you can make use of File Transfer Protocol, and you can use Server Message Block for sharing files and folders with Windows based PCs.

When files and folders are shared in this format over the network, there are bound to be data loss scenarios, when the data gets modified, but is not saved in the proper manner. Data loss can also occur if the data is edited by different users, but the changes do not get saved. Other reasons like virus attacks, malware, power outages can also lead to loss of data. In such a situation, it is best to make use of a potent Mac Recovery software to recover the lost data. Retrieve Mac Volume software lets you recover lost volumes on Mac easily.

Note: The Mac data recovery software should however be installed on the source drive, and not the local drive, since the data on a network is always present on the source drive. If the user is himself making use of the source drive, he can install the Mac data recovery software on that drive.
